Rethink Waste: Introducing the Year-Round HSP Program

Recycle More Products - Launching April 1, 2025

Roseridge is making it easier for residents to safely dispose of household hazardous materials while protecting the environment. Launching on April 1, 2025, the Year-Round Hazardous Special Products (HSP) Program provides a convenient way to dispose of certain hazardous items anytime during regular operating hours.

A Major Expansion in Hazardous Waste Disposal

Previously, only empty hazardous material containers could be disposed of. Now, both unused products and their containers can be disposed of properly at either of our facilities. This new program means fewer harmful chemicals in the environment and more materials being processed for safe recycling.

What Can Be Dropped Off Year-Round?

Roseridge now accepts a greater variety of household hazardous products that contain corrosive, flammable, or toxic chemicals. If a product has a CCCR (Consumer Chemicals and Containers Regulations) symbol—an octagon or inverted triangle—it is generally accepted. These include:

✔️ Household cleaners (oven cleaner, rust remover)

✔️ Flammable liquids (camping fuel, gasoline up to 25L)

✔️ Toxic products (tar remover, automotive additives)

✔️ Small pressurized gas cylinders (butane, propane, MAPP gas)

✔️ Domestic-use pesticides labeled "DANGER" or "WARNING"

By expanding the list of accepted materials, we are preventing more hazardous substances from entering landfills and ensuring they are disposed of properly.

What Cannot Be Dropped Off Year-Round?

Some hazardous materials still require special handling and can only be accepted at biannual Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Round-Up events. These include:

❌ Personal insect repellents (DEET, bug spray)

❌ Disinfectants, bleach, and drain cleaners

❌ Non-hazardous aerosols (hairspray, cooking spray, air fresheners)

❌ Mercury-containing items (thermometers, thermostats)

❌ Automotive fluids, pool chemicals, fertilizers, herbicides

❌ Explosives, fireworks, flares

❌ Unlabeled or unknown chemicals

For these items, residents can take advantage of Roseridge’s 2025 HHW Round-Up Events:

📅 May 10, 2025 – Morinville Leisure Centre Parking Lot (10:00 AM – 2:00 PM)

📅 October 4, 2025 – Gibbons Cultural Centre (10:00 AM – 2:00 PM)

Rethink How You Prepare for Your Visit

To maximize waste reduction and take full advantage of this expanded program, residents are encouraged to plan ahead before visiting our facilities:

  • Sort your waste before you arrive to ensure hazardous products and their containers are properly disposed of.
  • Reduce landfill waste by identifying which items can be recycled instead of discarded.
  • Take advantage of Roseridge’s expanded recycling options—unused products and their containers can now be processed responsibly.

How You Can Help

🔍 Check the label – Look for CCCR, WHMIS, or TDG symbols to determine if an item is accepted year-round or should be saved for an HHW Round-Up.

📞 Ask if unsure – Call 780-939-5678 or email info@roseridge.ab.ca for guidance.

♻️ Dispose responsibly – Never throw hazardous waste in household trash or down the drain.

With this expansion, Roseridge is making hazardous waste disposal more accessible and keeping more materials out of landfills than ever before. Small actions lead to a cleaner, safer future for everyone!
